About a month ago, our partner Jukka Miettinen from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland represented PathFinder at the 8th edition of the Winter Satellite Workshop, held on January 20โ23 in Espoo, Finland , one of the leading New Space events in the Nordic and Baltic region, gathering nearly 2,000 participants.
During the 21/01 poster session, Jukka presented PathFinder’s work on European-wide forest structure maps and estimates, showcasing how the project integrates Sentinel-2 satellite imagery with National Forest Inventory field data from 14 countries to produce 18 high-resolution maps, covering key forest attributes such as volume, biomass, tree height, basal area, and species composition.
At the heart of the presentation was the PathFinder Mapping and Estimation Platform.built around nFIESTA, a free and open-source methodological framework that enables harmonized forest estimates across Europe while protecting the privacy of NFI field plot locations. The platform delivers consistent, timely forest information for administrative units, INSPIRE grid cells, and biogeographical regions alike.
Bringing this work to an audience of space technology experts, Earth observation specialists, and industry professionals reflects PathFinder’s ambition: to make European forest monitoring more integrated, transparent, and actionable, from satellite to the ground.
